ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Dexter Cellicion (c. 1931–1999) was a renowned Zuni Pueblo artist and jeweler known for his meticulous, intricate inlay work, often created in close collaboration with his wife. His pieces are distinguished by the use of high-quality turquoise, coral, onyx, and mother of pearl, and they commonly feature traditional Zuni Sunface and Kachina motifs rendered with exceptional workmanship and attention to detail.
THE PIN:
This collectible vintage pin depicts a “Comanche Chief “ where the face & upper head are done in a channel inlay of mother of pearl, Mediterranean red coral & turquoise. His headdress is made with both hand chiseled turquoise & what looks like it may be brown “pen shell”. Pen shell is an elongated shell that happens to share characteristics with oysters, scallops, and mussels & is used a lot by the Puebloan people to then be used in their jewelry...On this same platform are hand stamped round sterling disks that decorate the perimeter.
This can be used as a pin for a top/dress/outer coat/purse/work bag or whatever else you see fit to put it!
A true historical piece of Zuni art!
