ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Sadly to say, Leo passed away in Spring 2025. So unfortunately, unless you find someone who had some of his work in stock or pieces that are vintage, there will be no new jewelry made by him. I know his ultra-beautiful gemstone creations will truly be missed — he was a major figure in the industry with a distinct signature style, to where you never had to second-guess who had made the piece. His artistry, careful workmanship, and unmistakable designs left a lasting impression on collectors and fellow artists alike.

Years back, Leo once teamed with renowned southwestern artisan Don Lucas, but unfortunately the two went their separate ways years ago and pursued individual paths while still maintaining notable similarities in style. Both artists favored multi-colored stones arranged in clustered settings with a variety of shaped cuts, yet Leo distinguished himself by incorporating signature southwestern materials such as turquoise, spiny oyster, and coral, and then pairing those with the most magnificent, vibrantly colored faceted semi-precious gemstones. That combination gave each piece a more top‑notch, high‑end feel and an ultra‑glamorous look that pushed Southwestern jewelry beyond strictly traditional boundaries.

One thing I have always admired is Leo’s mastery of the color wheel — if you’re not familiar, he often placed two colors opposite each other on the wheel for maximum contrast and impact. This necklace is a perfect example, where he paired purple with greens (which includes yellow), creating striking tension and harmony. Regardless of trends, he had a remarkable eye for color and an instinct for knowing which hue to place next to another so the overall design would truly pop. Now more than ever, anything of Leo's will always be in demand & his jewelry is found in more higher end galleries/stores.

THE NECKLACE:

If anyone’s designs can make you feel like a “million‑dollar, high‑glam royal,” it’s the work of Leo. He consistently delivers nothing less than an explosion of sparkling gems that catch the eye and gleam from a distance, no matter how close or far you are!!

Designed in a purple-and-lime theme, this piece is made with ten small 1" x 5/8" panels on each side (20 panels total); if you include the same-sized panel positioned directly above the central dangling drop, the count becomes 21 panels. Consistently throughout, each panel features a round cabochon of natural, non-dyed Gaspeite at the very top. Often we encounter lower-grade Gaspeite that has been artificially dyed a bright lime, which hides the stone’s true color; here, the Gaspeite is presented as it is meant to appear. Beneath the Gaspeite sit all these beautiful faceted Peridot and Amethyst gemstones. (Please view all photos.)

The Amethyst has an even saturation of color in the panels, but personally the marquise cut in the drop, is just a tad deeper in color. At the closure Leo added a tear drop cut of Peridot on each side that then leads to the hook/eye closure. There are 4 extender rings, where you can wear this from a 16-3/4” length to a 18” length.

This necklace is designed where “Quality” overrides ‘Quantity” so It’s not a heavy necklace, nor is it an over the top in size necklace.(See weights & measurements below) I truly wish I could capture the actual high amount of sparkle this has! It’s honestly unbelievable! It would be the perfect call for ANY‍ ‍high end event!! Guaranteed!

PLEASE READ:

****I do not consider myself a 'professional photographer" but I do try to give you photos that are 'realistic" in color. I find however, that photographing anything with 'yellow' in it, (oranges, greens) can come up a little more vivid than other colors, so please take this into consideration. So you can get a general idea of the color, I photographed this in front of 3 different back drops (the dark makes it come up a tad more vibrant) So please go through each photo. Please understand that each monitor varies and also plays a role in how vibrant or less vibrant as something appears. *****

To give you close up photos, pictures can tend to makes the item look GIGANTIC & everything is more magnified than in actuality. So to get an accurate idea of how big this is ,please either check it out on the mannequin (photo 2 ) or you can pull out a tape measure & compare to my given measurements.
