A PERSONAL WORD:
Personally, there is absolutely nothing more gorgeous in color than the mesmerizing hues you find in abalone, which I have to say, must be one of our earth’s most stunning and beautiful shells. It is definitely one of our absolute favorites here at Plata de Santa Fe Jewelry! Abalone showcases its natural iridescent colors in a way that is truly breathtaking, where you’ll notice its violet blue periwinkle shades, vibrant lime greens, soft pinks, sunny yellows, subtle light smokey grays, rich amber golds, and so much more. Because of this wide and dazzling array of colors within the shell, abalone becomes one of the main reasons it pairs perfectly with just about any color gemstone or rock you can imagine.
Federico was one designer who learned early on that you can actually combine this remarkable shell with gemstones such as Tanzanite, Peridot, Citrine, Blue Topaz, Pink Tourmaline, and yes, even our beloved turquoise! This combination not only enhances the beauty of the abalone but also creates eye-catching statement pieces that highlight the best qualities of both the shell and the stones.
THE NECKLACE:
Made in a classic “Lariat/Rosary” style necklace, this piece is thoughtfully designed with a generous amount of old 1940’s Czechoslovakia faceted cut “Mauvy-Rose” color crystals. These beautiful, vintage crystals are carefully paired with 11 Abalone hearts that serve as charming accents throughout the necklace. The sparkling, faceted crystals add a brilliant shine, elevating the overall design and giving the necklace a more refined and elegant feel that is perfect for both everyday wear and special occasions.
It’s designed in an impressive XXXL length, with the wearable portion of the neckline itself measuring a generous 37” long. Hanging prominently in the center, from an Abalone heart positioned directly above the cross to the bottom of the non-removable cross, extends 7” in length. Because this piece is constructed in two distinct sections—one being the neckline and the other, the attached cross—if you consider just the cross portion alone, that measures 5.25” in length.(SEE ESPECIALLY PHOTO 6) The necklace is super long, so instead of opening & closing the closure whenever you wear it, you can actually slip this one over the head if you like!
The material sits in a simple sterling bezel and from a designers point of view, this is the perfect setting when an artist has some gorgeous material that they want to showcase. This style allows for the material to "speak" rather than being overshadowed by a lot of metal work. This method of design guarantees that there will be no distractions that would take away from the beauty of the shell.
WEIGHT:
The 11 abalone hearts don’t weigh much as a rule, so the hefty ¾ pound weight actually comes from the generous amount of crystals & sterling. Please be sure this may not be too heavy & go over the weights before purchasing.(read weights below)
