THE EARRINGS:

I have to admit, what first drew my eyes to these very well-made earrings was the remarkable precision of their workmanship and their traditional cultural elegance, which more than makes up for their modest 1.25” size.

Known for their meticulously made mosaic inlay jewelry, these earringsare made by husband-and-wife duo Wilson and Carolyn Niiha, who reside at the Zuni Pueblo. Work like theirs doesn’t happen overnight; it requires many years of patient, repetitious practice and care, to produce jewelry of this caliber and detail.

Designed in a striking red-and-black theme, these earrings are made with high-quality natural Mediterranean red coral and deep black jet. Each piece of material is carefully cut one by one to precise proportions, then meticulously mosaic inlaid atop a mirror-polished sterling silver base. In the widest area of the earring the artisans shaped a perfect “fan” form, and on the same bed of sterling sits the distinctive Zuni Kachina sunface motif, a symbolic element recognizable and meaningful to the Zuni people.

You can wear these with the Zuni Sunface facing the face, which creates a mirrored look (with distinct right and left earrings), or rotate them horizontally for a different effect, giving the earrings a broader, more dramatic presence on the ear.(See photos)

With the cost of sterling going into ‘increase’ price mode , the rising cost is reflected in what artists have to now must pay per gram or ounce for the metal, as well as for their materials.. Artists are now having to charge more because of this.

Also factored into the price for these, is the artist’s name and reputation, the number of carats and the cost per carat for the materials used.. Also included is the need to compensate the artisan for their time and expertise required to create these.
