THE ARTIST-THE WORK:
Born in Albuquerque in '58 & grew up on the Navajo reservation in Cañoncito Band of Navajos,in the small community of To'hajiilee, New Mexico. His parents/grandparents were silversmiths before him and was taught by his mother & still uses tools/stamps that were passed down to him by his ancestors.

Navajo artisan Vincent Platero is renowned for his remarkable stamp work, which he treats as a true art form. While other artisans create jewelry that evolves into pieces of art by incorporating colored materials and varied metals, Vince deliberately pushes his jewelry in a whole different direction, emphasizing intricate stamp patterns, upon stamp patterns to see that each piece, becomes one of a kind pieces of art.

No, Vince doesn’t have to make jewelry like all the rest that’s highlighted by colorful stones and shells, all he needs is some plain sterling that he then stamps that give him his signature identity. The real beauty of his work comes from deliberately leaving all that rich, darkened oxidation deep within the stamp work to emphasize every impression. Another thing that gives his earrings identity, is for the small domed concho tops he adds to each pair of earrings, a subtle touch that makes his work, instantly recognizable.

Tooling the metal like he does takes real skill and years of practice — it doesn’t happen overnight. You need a great eye and steady dexterity to correctly pound and shape the sterling with accuracy. Since they’re made with lighter-gauge sterling, allows them to be comfortable and easy on the ears.(Read weights below) His finishing is unmatched, leaving each piece with a distinctive and authentic Santa Fe character.

Vince’s jewelry looks especially striking when paired with Navajo pearl necklaces or other oxidized pieces.

PLEASE NOTE:

I didn’t notice this until after photographing these, but they went through without a hallmark. With as much jewelry that flows through my hands, this is not at all un-common for an artist to get busy & fail to add this...I have carried Vince’s work for years & know it like no other, so I do however guarantee these to be his!
