THE ARTIST:

Gallup-based Navajo artisan Leander Tahe is an artist who shows no limit to what he can create. THE RING:

This ring was made by taking an artistic approach to a traditional design. Creatively executed in a ‘triple layer‑floral’ composition, the bottom square layer serves as a sturdy base for the round floral work that rests atop it. Each petal is formed using a skilled repousse technique, a method that highlights and validates Leander’s outstanding repousse workmanship. The design is further brought to life by leaving only the perimeter tips of the petals with a higher polish while the recessed areas of each petal are heavily blackened with oxidation, creating striking contrast and depth.

What gives this ring its impressive width and height is Leander’s choice to arrange the design in a diamond shape (2-1/2” x 2-3/8”). Had he designed it and or left it as a square, the piece would measure only 2-1/8” x 2”. The entire design is mounted on a 5/8” wide adjustable shank.

THE FINISHING:

Being a huge fan of Leander’s work, one thing I absolutely love about Leander's jewelry is in his finishing & even though many Native artists oxidize their jewelry, Leander oxidizes his in such a way where each piece made gives it his signature identity, validating whose work it is. He's one who instinctively knows how much & where to leave the darkened oxidation in order for the total earring to standout, while at the same time bringing out the beauty of the design.
