THE PENDANTS:

One thing Federico instinctually knows is, which materials complement each other when paired together. That sensibility comes from years of practice and experimentation — it doesn’t happen overnight — because you need a trained eye for balance and harmony, and a working knowledge of the color wheel, especially if you’re combining two or more colored gemstones. Pearls play a major role in many of his creations, and there are few combinations he hasn’t beautifully executed; when he chooses to use these God-given aquatic gems, whether set alone or mixed with other materials, the results are consistently and literally stunning! 

Both pendants are made in a three-tier movable design and are essentially the same construction, differing only in the center of the cross and an 1/8” difference in overall length between the two. Hanging from a 1-1/4” x 1-3/8” chunky baroque pearl cluster, Design 1’s cross features a window-type opening in the center that holds a larger round pearl, surrounded by small rice pearl clusters. The composition places the pearls in an almost ‘shadowbox’ setting, so they sit slightly lower than the gently raised abalone inlay pieces that form the cross. Design 2, by contrast, is an all-abalone design with the entire cross surface composed of abalone cuts. 

To help protect the abalone from the elements and to enhance its appearance, each abalone cut appears to have a thin resin-like coating that also adds a subtle extra shine.

In the photos, I did not use any features when I edited the pictures that would give you a false color, but rather, what I did do, was turned the abalone toward the light so you can witness all the color that is naturally there

Also factored into prices, are the artist’s name and reputation, the number of carats and the cost per carat,the quality & the need to compensate the artisan for the time and expertise required to create the piece. These are just some of the elements that together explain and contribute to the higher final price.
