THE MEZCALA CULTURE:
The Mesoamerican Mezcala culture from the state of Guerrero in southern Mexico, were known for their figural stone art that had a somewhat simple look, where they never sculpted dimensional defined figures, but rather where their carvings had flat/smooth surfaces. The way they defined the body's definition would be lines carved deep into the stone that showed separation in the arms,legs,face..Although not as old as the Olmecs, but yet very old in today's standards, their civilization was between the pre-classic period between 700 and 200 BC.into the Classic period c.250-650 AD.

A PERSONAL NOTE:
Those of you that know me know I carry just about everything Federico makes & what I love about him, are his wide range of designs where you'll get the most phenomenal looking turquoise pieces you'll ever see (& wear!) & then he'll turn around & give you his very elegant & romantic Oaxaca Dove/Filigree jewelry designs. This pendant is another perfect example of what this designer is about...Federico is one whose proud of his rich cultural Mexican heritage & all it offers and It's designers like him who keep the historical art of Mexico alive & who brings pieces like this to the public eye, that many would not have known about otherwise!

THE PENDANT:
Federico took the historical figural vintage Mezcala stone art & put a modern day twist to it by using stones known to the southwest. The colors in both the spiny oyster shell & turquoise are equally intense in hue & are heavily saturated in color, which have a lot to do with how the eye is drawn to the piece!
It's made in a 4-3/4" tall conversational size where the focus is on the Mezcala stone art that is framed by a halo of chunky tear drop cuts of the oyster shell that act as the elaborate headdress on the top half & on the bottom half are oval cuts of deep teal colored turquoise. The Mezcala figure, oyster shell & turquoise sit in their own secure bezels & sit atop of heavy gauge sterling that dictates it's over 6 ounce weight!
This will hook onto your favorite sterling bead necklace & comes with a shepherds hook that can be opened more so it can accommodate a larger size bead (If you don't work with metal,a reputable jeweler can easily do this for you with a pair of needle nose pliers) I do want to mention that this has a hefty 6 ounce weight, so whatever you put it on,has to be strong to accommodate it's weight..From my professional opinion I think these large size pendants look great when they are dropped away from the neck,so something in the 24" or longer look best.It is shown on the mannequin with Navajo Sandra Zambrano's 26"-14.5 mm bench bead Navajo pearl necklace.(Not Included)
