THE ABSTRACT ABALONE ‘KACHINA’:
Known for creating these comical, abstract “Kachina” figures that are made of various materials, Federico never seems to fail us by making each piece a conversation starter all its own, that is sure to bring a smile to your face and spark admiration from anyone who sees it!
These particular pendants are designed of luminescent colorful Abalone shell where 5 various sized, various shape cuts of abalone are used that help to create this abstract figure.(Other Kachina designs are under the ‘pendant’, ‘ring’ and ‘necklace’ categories)
Personally, I think the wide, flamboyant headdress is the real star of the show, designed with an impressive 3” wide span!! The piece features evenly matched teardrop cuts of abalone that stand out slightly from the other abalone shapes used throughout. These teardrop cuts, along with the large round faces on both pendants, appear to have a thin, resin-like coating that imparts a subtle, extra shine—something the remaining abalone cuts do not exhibit.

THE SHEPHERDS HOOK CONNECTION:
This has a large, thick gauge shepherds hook that measures 1/2” in width. If you have large chunky beads you want to wear with this, the necklace you choose will either have to be strung loosely so you can spread the beads enough to fit under the shepherds hook, so the stringing material is sitting against the hook, since they will not be able to fit if the necklace can’t separate enough and or are too chunky to fit through the hooks opening as it is.
If you’re not going to use chunky beads, you can easily slide up to roughly a 10 mm to 12 mm beaded necklace through the shepherds hook as shown on the mannequin. If you’re handy with knowing how to work with sterling & a pair of needle nose pliers, you can gently open the hook up to accommodate the diameter size of the necklace so they can sit up under the hook.(If you don't work with metal, a reputable jeweler can easily open the hook up more with a pair of needle nose pliers)
If these methods can’t work work for you, the next option is getting a “Bale Converter” that you will hook onto the shepherds hook. (see photos 11,12,13) I had 2 style “Bale Converters” made for us from 2 different Navajo artisans, that are used for these pendants! And depending on how big the opening of the converter is, will determine what size beaded necklace or multi strand necklace you would use.
By using one of these, gives you the option to wear from a small to larger size beaded necklace. If you zoom in on photos, you will see how it connects onto the shepherds hook.(These are posted under this same “Pendant” category) For photos 11,12,13, I used Tyler Brown’s 24 mm bale opening with a 5/8” wide loop at the bottom..

USING AS A PENDANT OR A PIN:
Even though these are designed to be worn either as a pendant or as a pin, these have some weight, so if you choose to wear one as a pin it will likely perform best on a sturdier, heavier fabric. (Like a winter coat) Personally, I would opt for the pendant option for greater comfort and security, but ultimately it’s your choice how you prefer to wear and style them.

PLEASE NOTE WHAT PRICING IS BASED ON :
Not only have Federico’s prices increased, but the cost of what artists are now having to pay for materials, has gone up as well. (Sterling & Stone/Shell) These factors are what is reflected in the price for this.
With the cost of sterling being on shaky ground, while it fluctuates daily, the rising cost is reflected in what artists have to now pay per gram or ounce for the metal.. Artists are now charging more because of this increase.
Also factored into the price for this, is the artist’s name and reputation, the number of carats and the cost per carat for the materials used.. Also included is the need to compensate the artisan (And or staff) for their time and expertise required to create these.
