Kewa Pueblo Folk Art Artisan- MARY TAFOYA -Mosaic Inlay- Whimsical ~ Wearable Art ~Butterfly / Flower/ Sun -Kingman Turquoise Bead Necklace

$685.00

This necklace is the perfect example of what Mary's work's about..Her pieces have such a uplifting feel & have a way of turning any negative energy, into positive, in just a blink! The way this is done,it's no wonder why Mary is continually asked by the public, "Is this painted"? And in a sense it is,but only with this one,it's 'painted' in stone & shell!

Taking from various raw materials,Mary cuts each down to size & then taking from those shapes, she then incorporates the shapes & turns them into these picturesque scenes, where they become whimsical pieces of wearable art & then become conversational pieces! You will definitely be asked about this one when you wear it!!

Shaping each by hand, this is a spring/summer outdoor scene where you have a butterfly made of Conus shell, dyed green Gaspeite & Spiny Oyster..Their wings are created from the curls of the shell when she goes to slice them & with each form then creates these fun shapes! It's impressive how she can see a butterfly or anything else in advance, just from curls of shell! The butterfly is caught zooming in on a multi colored flower, with the stem/stalk being made of Cowrie shells. In the distance is the hot sun that has a Cowrie shell outline, with the heat being portrayed with orange spiny oyster shell.

The scene is framed by Rhodonite(right side)Kingman turquoise(Bottom)Serpentine (top)& finally

on the left is Phosphosiderite (Mauvy Lavender)..The trapezoid shaped bale is made with Kingman Turquoise. This is where the foxtail is threaded through for the beads to connect. Each are hand mosaic inlaid atop of a black jet backing.

The beads are hand cut with a even measured graduation, where they get tinier as they lead to the hook/eye closure. Because Pueblo work is made more of stones & shell's & rarely do you see any sterling used, makes this very wearable in weight, without it being too heavy on the neck.

If you're not familiar with this incredible artist's work, just owning a piece, will make you a fan for a lifetime! "Art' can't be done twice, which makes each piece of her's a 'one of a kind' piece of art that you can treasure a lifetime! Would make a perfect gift for any age to enjoy!
