THE EARRINGS:

Who would have thought that by taking four different cuts of abalone and arranging them thoughtfully in just the right places, you could arrive at a design that forms a truly striking “figural” composition? It’s remarkable how many beautiful and surprising patterns you can create with a bit of artistic vision, simply by working with and embracing the shapes and colors of the stones.

Made in a clip-on earring, the oval cut beautifully emulates the face, the square cut thoughtfully mimics the chest, while the rectangular cuts echo the arms and abdomen, and the teardrop cuts act as the movable legs. Very noticeable on the ear, but yet striking, these earrings are playful, wearable art—and definitely a real conversation starter!

The dominant colors in these are mainly the chartreuse limes and periwinkle lavenders, complemented by soft mauvy pinks and warm, but vibrant golden yellows. The base tone is a taupe-gray, and when the earrings catch the light and move, those first-mentioned colors come alive; when they lie flat you notice fewer flashes of color and more of the underlying gray. To protect the abalone from the elements and to enhance its natural play of color, each shell piece appears to be finished with a thin resin-like coating that also lends a subtle, durable extra shine.

These are a heavier earring (2 ounces even) , so to have had them made in a post, was totally out of the question, since something this heavy on the ear, would make the ear tear,so by going the clip on route, was the wisest!

In the photos, I did not use any features when I edited the pictures that would give you a false color, but rather, what I did do, was turned the abalone toward the light so you can witness all the color that is naturally there. Please go through each photo to see any variation.

Not only have Federico’s prices increased, but the cost of what artists are now having to pay for materials, has gone up as well. (Sterling & Stone) These things are what are reflected in the price for these.

With the cost of sterling going into ‘increase’ mode and literally being out of control, the rising cost is reflected in what artists have to now must pay per gram or ounce for the metal.. Artists are now charging more because of this.

Also factored into the price for these, is the artist’s name and reputation, the number of carats and the cost per carat for the materials used.. Also included is the need to compensate the artisan (And or staff) for their time and expertise required to create these.
