Joe Paul Sr. was from the Four Corners region and was based out of Farmington, NM. He is considered a highly collectible Navajo artist, and in researching his work the word “legendary” is repeatedly used to describe him.

Joe wasn’t an artist who drifted into modern-day jewelry trends; no, not him, so no matter how many years passed, how designs evolved, or how metal finishes grew glossier, he remained true to his Navajo roots. When you look at anything he made, you can immediately recognize an undeniable “old school” Navajo traditional look, regardless of the changing world around him.

Coming from an era when using high-grade natural turquoise was paramount, he was known for selecting the best materials available and handmaking every decorative element from scratch, as clearly demonstrated in this particular cuff.

A WORD: Joe Paul Sr. should not be confused with his grandson “Joe Paul’s” jewelry who actually followed in his grandfathers foot steps & does sign his name ”Joe Paul” but with a stamped hallmark, whereas Joe Paul Sr.” has a hand inscribed his hallmark.(See hallmark photo at end)

THE CUFF:

I must admit, when this was brought to me, a couple of things immediately jumped out: first, the incredible and ultra‑fabulous cut of the Royston, and second, the overall impeccable, classic workmanship. The stone itself is an absolutely beautiful teal blue that confidently announces “I’m big, bold and beautiful” as it sits front and center, commanding attention from every angle.

All the embellished accents are literally made from scratch, with him hand-stamping the small beads that sit at the north and south ends. These beads were made by melting the sterling down and then placing each one along the perimeter of the face. There is traditional Navajo saw work, that was beautifully executed, along the east and west sides of the face.

The larger 2-3/4” face rests on a tri-split shank constructed from heavy-gauge 1/2” triangular wire, with a twisted wire strand running down the center. Outside the face are corrugated “fan” appliques, that blend fluidly with the face, so they are visible and striking when viewed from the top.

SIZING:

This is made for an average sized 6-5/8" wrist ,(just 1/8” shy of being a 6-3/4” wrist) but because it has a 1.25" gap opening, this is meant for a bit more fleshy/meaty wrist.. If this doesn’t quite measure to be the perfect size to fit your wrist, I would recommend taking it to a reputable jeweler who knows how to adjust cuffs. Just remember that the only thing that can be changed is the gap, whether opened more or closed down some, and does not change the “Interior” 5-3/8” measurement. It's of extreme importance that you know your wrist size and what gap opening works best for it to comfortably fit over the arm before purchasing.
