“Listen and let it penetrate your heart…do not be troubled or weighed down with grief. Do not fear any illness or vexation, anxiety or pain. Am I not here who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not your fountain of life? Are you not in the folds of my mantle? In the crossing of my arms? Is there anything else you need?” (Our Lady’s words to her servant Juan Diego.)

Many artisans have depicted Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in a variety of ways, whether rendered in sterling silver or pure gold and sometimes even set with precious gemstones. While Navajo artists have certainly made Guadalupe jewelry, it is not however especially common to see, in fact, finding her represented in a stone/shell mosaic inlay form is somewhat rare and not the easiest to find. So I am honored to be able to offer them to you!
When Navajo artist Eula Wylie was asked to create each of these Guadalupe pendants, that was absolutely no hesitation & because of her decades long years in the industry where she repetitiously used her lapidary & technical skills, she ended up taking these to an entirely new level of exquisite artistry by the time they were completed. There is obvious love & time that she poured into the pendant that cannot be denied.
THE PENDANT:
Each pendant carries an unmistakable Navajo aesthetic, so you’ll immediately recognize the tribal affiliation from the fine sterling workmanship and traditional design elements. Mosaic inlay, however, is more closely associated with Puebloan people (Kewa and Zuni pueblos in particular) who developed and perfected that intricate style. To create mosaic inlay like this requires a highly skilled lapidarian, especially when working in such meticulous miniature form and not every jeweler possesses this type of talent. It demands an exceptional eye for detail and for art, a considerable amount of patience, technical know‑how, and a steady hand. Eula exemplifies and validates that she possesses all of these essential attributes that it took to “Paint” & create them..
Sitting in a bezel that’s surrounded by all of Eula’s finely hand-stamped applique work is roughly a 2-1/4” x 1-1/4” oval of the Guadalupe artwork. What I admire most is how each piece of Spiny Oyster she used carries natural lines inherent to the shell, making it the perfect choice for the radiant rays. Every pendant has a shimmery white Mother of Pearl face, so when you turn the pendant, it’s as if sunlight beams across her features and casts gentle shadows on the opposite side—just like a real-life scene or a painted depiction. Eula rendered the finest details: delicate brows, a sculpted nose and facial contour, and even red lips; her hands are folded in prayer. Of the four pendants, only Designs 3 and 4 include the black “crescent moon.” (see photos)
All four pendants are essentially the same in terms of Eula’s traditional Navajo sterling workmanship, the size and smooth finished tapered bales, and the warm salmon color of the mosaic inlaid Spiny Oyster shell “Rays.” What varies between them is the material and color used for her Mantle/Tilma, and on some pieces there are slight differences in the detail.
They are not over the top huge, nor are they too small to see.. In fact it’s not about the size with these, but more so about all the time, love and attention to detail that each took to make. These are collectible pieces of “WEARABLE ART’ that can be passed on through to the next & the next generation..
THE BALE:
These are tapered & have a big enough opening that you can thread a large size diameter bead (or multi stands) through it. Each have a 3/4” (About 18 mm) opening, but you want to go smaller than that so the pendant can move & breathe on the strand. From a professional level, this size pendant would look great with a necklace length of around 20” to 26” or so inches. But that’s your call!
