"Don't just stand there, let's get to it, Strike a pose, there's nothing to it!" Madonna (Vogue)

THE SUNGLASSES:
When it comes to unique & different Puebloan mosaic art, there’s only one artist that comes to mind & that is the name “JOLENE BIRD”.

While leaving buyers, as well as judges, in awe and disbelief over the exceptional quality of her work, Jolene has successfully built a respected name in the industry for her intricate, time-consuming mosaic art. This dedication and craftsmanship have earned her numerous prestigious 1st place award ribbons. These glasses serve as the prime example of her unique style—pieces that you simply won’t find other artists from the Kewa village creating.

These are uniquely different from anything you might find online or even in a Southwestern or Santa Fe jewelry gallery, and honestly, they just might be some of the coolest sunglasses you could ever come across! How many people can you truly say that you know, who own a pair of handmade, authentic Native turquoise sunglasses?!

They’re designed using all the traditional techniques passed down from the Kewa Puebloan people, yet they have an ultra-modern, cutting-edge vibe perfect for 2025 & beyond! It’s through masterpieces like these glasses that you really get to see the true essence and beauty of Jolene’s artistry. Everything she touches transforms into a future work of art in her eyes, blending heritage and innovation seamlessly. (Make sure to read "About Jolene" at the bottom for more!)

Made with a very slight "Cat Eye" design, the sunglasses served as the perfect base for Jolene's mosaic inlay work. Made entirely of blue Kingman turquoise , she carefully cuts and shapes each tiny piece, meticulously arranging them to intricately lay atop the black acrylic (plastic?) frame. The design gracefully follows the contours of the entire eyeglass, creating a seamless and striking visual effect. They pair beautifully with just about any southwestern jewelry collection, allowing you to effortlessly pull from the natural turquoise color to complete your look.

These glasses are designed primarily for individuals with a petite to average-sized frame, leaning towards the smaller end of the average spectrum. I say this based on my own experience, as I am petite myself and found that they fit perfectly, while still allowing for a comfortable amount of movement. To determine if these will fit you well, I recommend taking a pair of glasses you already own and measuring the specific areas shown in photo 7, then comparing those measurements to mine for reference. Measurements/thickness are measured on the inside of the arm that rests against your face, rather than on the outside, because the mosaic stone on the exterior would cause an inaccurate reading. Additionally, Jolene mentioned that these glasses provide a 400 UV protection rating, which is the highest level of UV protection available on the market.

JOLENE’S MULTI STRAND TURQUOISE & OPAL NECKLACE ON MANNEQUIN CAN BE FOUND BY GOING TO THE ‘NECKLACE 2’ CATEGORY!!!

MEET THE ARTIST: JOLENE BIRD

There's a good reason why, at virtually every Native American juried and judged event that Jolene attends, she consistently wins top honors—whether it’s "Best of Show," the prestigious Grand Prize, or first place in her category. When you take the time to see the truly unique and intricate type of work she creates, it quickly becomes clear why she is so highly regarded. Jolene has earned numerous awards for her stunning mosaic pots and vases, and I have had the honor of carrying many of her pieces, all of which have sold out due to their exceptional beauty and workmanship.

Incorporating what has been passed down through oral history and from generation after generation, Jolene brings her own unique twists to her designs, pouring her heart and soul into everything she creates. The judges at Native American art events are consistently left in awe and disbelief because the pieces she presents are unlike anything typically seen among other Puebloan artists, especially in the fields of the "Art of Mosaic" and "Puebloan Jewelry."

I believe that with Jolene, it's never just about being another Puebloan mosaic artist; it’s about the distinctive way she approaches her work and, most importantly, what she chooses to mosaic. Her creativity knows no bounds—she has designed a wide variety of stunning mosaic pieces, including an intricate chess set, mosaic sunglasses, beautifully adorned chairs, a mini-sized mosaic inlaid Volkswagen Beetle car, and even a fully mosaic inlaid Gibson guitar! Truly, you name it, and Jolene will mosaic it.

From a young age, Jolene learned this intricate art from her grandparents, who were themselves exceptional mosaic artists. A pivotal moment came when her grandmother, Anita, encouraged her to "seek a new direction." This wise advice inspired Jolene to move beyond traditional styles and embrace a more contemporary approach. She began designing high-end, quality pieces that have earned her the respect and admiration of many Native American scholars. Over time, Jolene has not only distinguished herself but has surpassed hundreds of artists within the Puebloan community.

Jolene currently resides in Kewa Village with her immediate family, and she is now passing on everything she has learned about this ancestral Puebloan art form. Notably, she works closely with her artisan son, Charles Bird, whose own jewelry can be found in my listings. Jolene’s work is highly collectible, beautifully blending a rich historical Puebloan heritage with a fresh, contemporary edge that captivates both traditional collectors and modern enthusiasts alike.
