ABOUT THE ARTIST:

One doesn’t know where to begin when you speak of New Mexico’s own “Charles Carrillo” , but could only begin to say that he’s not only one of our favorites here in New Mexico, but his status ranks high throughout the globe.. Charlie is a NUMEROUS award winning “Santero” (a carver and painter of saints) who has kept this art alive since the Spanish invasion during the 1600’s. Charles still uses all the same Spanish techniques that reflect 18th-century Spanish New Mexico.

Charles holds a number of titles that describe him, from being a Historian who also has earned a doctorate in anthropology/archaeology from the University of New Mexico, an author, a chemist (achieving colors by way of using our earth’s natural resources that come from stones & plants) and who I humbly call, a personal friend.

Although you can Google his name where you’ll find a number of sites that will tell you more about this amazing artist, Carrillo’s works have shown throughout the USA and are a part of many permanent collections in United States museums including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, DC, the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, and the Denver Museum of Art among others. Also at Albuquerque’s Pueblo Cultural Center, there is one room devoted entirely to his works where he painted a retablo solely dedicated to each one of New Mexico’s Pueblos. Each Pueblo has their own saint, along with their art that is signature to that pueblos pottery design.Charlie also helped with a project in the Spanish village of Abiquiú where he & his wife Debbie live, which was made famous by the artist Georgia O’Keeffe.

Today, he is widely recognized not only as the primary authority on this subject but also as the most accomplished and respected artist actively practicing within this rich regional tradition.

“MI CASA es SU CASA” RETABLOS:

Charles' paints don’t consist of traditional tubes of color; instead, his paints come from carefully selected plants and naturally colored stones. Much like any artist who blends two or more colors from tubes to create a specific shade, Charles achieves his unique colors by skillfully mixing the pigments derived from one or more different plants, the vibrant flowers of these plants, or the hues found in stones. (For example: if you know anything about the color wheel & how when you mix two colors to create a new color, this is how he achieves the lime green for example,by using Indigo (Blue) and then mixes it with Marigold flowers (yellow) to make the green. This natural approach allows him to produce a wide range of beautiful, organic colors for his artwork.

Whether you’re a resident of Santa Fe or New Mexico, or maybe you’re someone who just wishes to bring the authentic and traditional look of Santa Fe/New Mexico into your home, no house or door feels truly complete without having one of these beautifully made retablos hanging on the exterior or interior!!

Made exclusively for my store, each of the four “Mi Casa es Su Casa” Retablos offered is unique, differing from the others in design and detail. However, they all share the same dedication to traditional techniques and are carefully hand-painted on hand-cut “Ponderosa Pine” wood, that Charlie cut & shaped himself, ensuring an authentic and high-quality finish. Also, all have Colonial looking Angels that act as protectors!

THESE MAKE THE PERFECT HOUSEWARMING GIFT!!!

I do not consider myself a 'professional photographer" but I do try my hardest to give you photos that are 'realistic" in color.. But please realize that all monitors are different, so the materials can look brighter (or duller) from one computer to the next.

To provide you with close up photos providing you with all the fine detail, pictures tend to make the item look much larger & everything is more magnified than in actuality. .So to get an accurate idea of how big each are, please pull out a tape measure or ruler & compare to my given measurements listed above.
