PROVENANCE:
This gorgeous piece is a part of my own private collection that I have had tucked away for at least 20 years. I pulled a few pieces that are just not worn as much as I think they should be & even though I adore every piece I own, some are not worn as much as others, so I will be posting other pieces in the weeks head.(All vintage Mexican) I know I may regret selling some, since these pieces cannot be easily replaced!
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
If your a fan of Matilde Poulat's (MATL) incredible baroque style & very signature look, then you can't help but fall in love with the next best thing & that is the jewelry by Dominguez. There were a few (with Dominguez being one) that emulated Matl's style so perfectly & if you didn't look at the hallmark, your 1st guess would be Poulat's..Not sure about Dominguez, but a few that I'm aware of, actually worked under Poulat & worked out of Mexico City. (Ismael Rivera & an artist that goes by "CEL" were a few I know of) Like MATL, Dominguez's work is as meticulous, extremely precise & highly ornate while giving you a wondrous, alluring look that was created during the height of Mexican Silver Renaissance Days. This is a "Pre-Eagle" necklace, meaning that it was made before 1948,when the Eagle stamp was mandatory for everything being sold in & coming out of Mexico.
THE COLLAR:
It's pieces like this that make Mexican vintage so mouthwatering desirable! This is literally a 'Piece of Art"!!! It's designed with 19 panels where the design is repeated in it's entirety & follows the lower part of the neck, which personally I believe statement pieces always look their best!
The impeccable workmanship is phenomenal, when you figure that when the design & stones were laid on a sheet of sterling,he then precisely sawed out those areas where the lacy areas are open.(See backside of necklace) Each panel has somewhat of a trapezoid shape & each panel is then connected by a strip of sterling. Made with evenly matched 8 mm round cabochons of amethyst & 3-4 mm red coral & green turquoise that are used as accents.
