A PERSONAL WORD:
Once you see the intricate and beautiful work of Kewa Puebloan artists Delbert and Torevia Crespin, it is something that you simply can't easily forget. I personally feel it is not only the way they skillfully work with their colorful, natural materials but more importantly, it is their unique and intuitive "eye" for knowing exactly how and where to then lay each piece that makes every creation brilliantly stand out, all while capturing a perfectly balanced and harmonious form. With the Crespins, there are no calipers or precise measuring tools used for exact measurements; rather, every element is carefully hand-cut by "eye and feel," following the traditional methods passed down by their ancestors many centuries ago.
They are an extremely traditional Kewa Puebloan family who live quietly and comfortably in the Kewa village, surrounded by their children and grandchildren. The Crespins maintain their own farm, where they grow corn and a variety of other crops, and also raise cattle, sheep, pigs, peacocks! Their lifestyle is deeply connected to their heritage and culture, which is beautifully reflected in their timeless artistry.

THE HAND MADE SQUARE SHAPED & ROUND BEADS:
This is the true beauty of Puebloan art, rooted in the fact that they are the master lapidarians of Native jewelry, where every piece is meticulously cut and shaped entirely by hand. This intricate art form has been lovingly passed down through generations from their Ancestral Puebloan ancestors, who once thrived in the historic Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde regions of the southwestern United States. Each bead you see is completely handmade, beginning with a larger rough piece of Serpentine, which is carefully shaped, beveled, and polished repeatedly until the perfect shape and size is achieved. While this is indeed a time-consuming and painstaking process, the exceptional workmanship and stunning finished result, make every moment of effort truly worthwhile and incredibly rewarding!
Many times we'll see Serpentine used as an accent color in Puebloan jewelry, adding subtle hints of its unique hue to complement other stones. However, when you see Serpentine used as the focal stone, it really makes you wonder, "Why isn't Serpentine used more frequently than it currently is?" Personally, it has to be one of the prettiest yellow-green stones, especially when found in this translucent yellow-green color that catches the light so beautifully. Like many stones, Serpentine can range widely in color saturation; some appear quite light, while others have more of a vibrant and intense shade. Additionally, some are very solid, resembling many common rocks, while others are strikingly translucent, like the Serpentine featured in this set. (Which personally, I have to admit, I deeply admire the translucent Serpentine the best!)
Validating the "Hand Made" factor, you'll notice that some of the beads vary in thickness, with certain ones featuring a skinnier width while others appear noticeably thicker. The square beads subtly graduate down in size as they approach the closure, creating a gentle tapering effect. These squares alternate with small, 4 mm round hand made Serpentine beads, which serve not only as spacers, but are also used in the finalization of the necklace, while enhancing the overall design and emphasizing the artisanal workmanship.
The matching complimenting earrings are made with the same size beads that act as spacers in the necklace & have alternating cuts of turquoise, black jet & light colored apple coral. . The earrings are pretty light on the lobes.(See weights below for you to decide)
Would make the perfect gift for any teenager to adult!
