THE ARTISAN:

Cippy Crazyhorse was born Cipriano Quintana in 1946 at Cochiti Pueblo into a highly recognized silversmithing family. His father, Joe H. Quintana, trained at the reputable designer Frank Patania's Thunderbird Studio in Santa Fe, a workshop famed for professional silver techniques during the mid-century Pueblo trade. Joe came to be proudly regarded as one of the finest silversmiths of his generation, and Cippy was ideally positioned to absorb that deep education and workmanship from a true master jeweler. His mother, Teresita, was also a renowned jeweler in her own right and played a central role in shaping the household’s creative life and artistic traditions.

Cippy came to the bench later than many, and by hard luck: due to an injury while working as an electrician's assistant on the construction of the Cochiti Dam in 1974, it was an unexpected blessing that the accident occurred because it "forced" him to try his hand at silversmithing. We might never have had such a phenomenal artist in the industry if not for that unfortunate, horrific injury.

He began by making simple silver chains and taught himself the old Pueblo way, working patiently and steadily while receiving encouragement from his father and the moral support of his wife, Susan. Since that beginning he has produced thousands of pieces of jewelry, continually looking ahead and refining his skills. He continues to build a distinctive, highly recognizable aesthetic, while maintaining his own signature style that draws deeply on the traditions and enduring charm of the Southwest.

WHAT MAKES CIPPY’S WORK SO SPECIAL?

Cippy’s signature style, you could say, is the substantial weight and presence of each piece of jewelry he creates. Working in thick, heavy-gauge silver, he gives the metal deep, carefully chiseled stamping that defines the surface and character of every item. His creations are still made the “Old School” way where he melts scrap silver and pours it into ingots himself, just as artisans did in earlier generations.

There’s very little you could ask of an artist of his caliber that would make it impossible for him to make and he makes every genre of wearable jewelry that range from cuff bracelets, concha belts and ranger-set buckles to bead necklaces, many styles of crosses, and Pueblo dragonfly pieces, you name it, he makes it.

What I personally love about his work is not only the strong, traditional designs, but the high polished contemporary finishing he applies to those classic, undeniable forms. That high polish enhances the contrast created by leaving oxidation in the recessed chisel and stamp work, giving each piece depth and visual drama. His designs can’t help BUT pull you in!
