THE ARTIST:
There's not a time that has ever gone by when Kewa Puebloan artist Warren Nieto & I have met, that I haven't been further educated about Pueblo culture & their centuries old Anasazi history that date back to 1500 BC..Who better to hear it from than the one who lives & breathes it!There's not much he doesn't know that he can't tell you about & it's these roots of his that go into the jewelry he makes.Each piece will have a Puebloan story,a meaning & it's almost like he "paints the story"about life in the Pueblo into his work...He is one of the most humble artisans I know & am proud to bring you his work!
THE THUNDERBIRD NECKLACE:
The mighty Thunderbird is the signature bird of the southwest & no southwestern jewelry collection should go without having at least one piece!
Made with an incredible intensity of colors,this Thunderbird Puebloan Squash Blossom necklace is a sight for the senses!The way the depth of the red bamboo coral compliments the green turquoise really makes one color to the other, stand out.There are accents of black jet & shimmery Mother of pearl that are used to break up the color pattern.
TOTALLY made by hand,Warren hand cut & shaped all the material & then mosaic inlaid them atop of a dark wood.Known for doing lots of "Kiva Steps" in his designs,you can see this not only in the Thunderbird,but the 8 squash blossom panels as well.It's almost a signature look of his.
The art is threaded through his hand made wood bales & lays in between baked Melon shell heishi,where he took the soft peach colored shell & baked the color out to make it a creamy color.The heishi graduates to smaller size disks as it gets to the closure which is topped off with sterling cones & comes with a 3-1/4" sterling extender.You can put the hook at the closure anywhere within the chain to wear it shorter or at full length.
This screams "Kewa Pueblo" who are known for their working with all hand cut stones & shells that are beautifully mosaic inlaid just like their Anasazi ancestry did centuries ago!
