Taking the Oaxaca "El Jardin" earring to the next level, Federico added his own distinctive twist by having them made in an extra‑large, super‑size length that goes beyond huge!!. For those who aren’t familiar, the Jardin is one of five traditional designs signature to Oaxaca, Mexico, and is celebrated for its characteristic “bow.”

They’re made by the hands of one of Federico’s master Oaxaca filigree artisans, who makes the work look almost effortless; but in truth, there are many time-consuming, delicate steps involved in making earrings like these. Each earring deserves recognition for the skill and patience required, and for keeping alive an art form that is carefully passed down from one generation to the next, which by the way, goes all the way back to the time when the Spanish came into Mexico & brought their design techniques with them.

Because filigree is so time consuming, it is actually becoming a ‘lost art.’ It is a technique that requires skilled hands, many repetitious years of practice, solid mathematical ability, and an extremely good eye for perfection. Any little mistake, especially when artisans are wrapping the circular filigree forms, will be immediately noticeable if it isn’t executed flawlessly. Being even 1 to 2 mm off, can destroy the uniform look. But as you can see, each form here is perfectly rounded and precisely aligned with both the perimeter and the interior lines.

These are made in a triple tier, with each tier formed in its own distinct shape and linked together by looped rings to allow for movement. Each tier’s base is first made by hand, so every tiny Italian coral bead has its own little housing to sit securely. The tiny Mediterranean coral beads are carefully sewn into each section and finished with a precise 'diamond cut' technique that follows their outline, which produces extra sparkle when light strikes the earrings. The coral is strung on sterling wire and then tied off neatly on the backside. (See photos.) The filigree wire is serrated, which gives the sterling that rich, tactile texture you see.
