ABOUT ELVIRA BILL:

It wasn’t easy for Navajo artisan Elvira Bill to escape the art of making jewelry. After all, when your parents happen to be Emerson Bill and Nora Tahe Bill, who better to learn from, since there was little chance of running from the deep influence they had on the young Elvira, whose childhood was surrounded by the tools, stories, and traditions of silversmithing and design.

Elvira was born & raised in Twin Lakes, New Mexico, and it wasn’t till after spending six years serving our country in the US Army that she decided to go back home & become serious about carrying on all that her mother & father taught her.. Elvira developed her own style after years of repetition work & specializes in working with extremely heavy gauge sterling that is designed with deep deep stamp work.

THE CUFF:

One can only imagine the strength required, the dexterity, the precise eye, the steady hand and the mathematical/ analytical mind needed to pound such deep impressions into metal this thick—that is, unless you’ve done it yourself. Elvira makes it look almost effortless, but for most people achieving this level of exactness simply isn’t possible.

She follows the “old school” traditions, stamping her sterling exactly as her ancestors did before her & their ancestors before them. Today many artists have it much easier: they use a roller to imprint designs quickly, which speeds production but sacrifices something essential. The difference is clear: — you lose the true “art” when a machine does the work, and you give up a measure of control over the metal. Every single stamp you see, including the precise double row design of tiny rectangular shapes are completely and perfectly pounded by hand.

THE FINISHING:

Given a rich oxidized finish, this cuff will beautifully complement all your other oxidized jewelry pieces—whether strands of Navajo Pearls, earrings, rings, you name it! It will go with both vintage and new collections and for another, being that it’s all sterling, you can wear this when you’re doing a day of nothing but all sterling or when you want to wear it with colored stone pieces, making it a very versatile cuff!!

SIZING:

This cuff is made for a medium size wrist that’s on the “Smaller” side of medium.. It has a 1” gap opening which is great for a wrist that’s not so "fleshy and meatier". Because of the heavy gauge sterling, this is not adjustable... So it does help to know your wrist size & what gap you need to go over the arm comfortably before purchasing, since cuffs fit different than any other type bracelet.
