MEET THE ARTIST:
Born & raised while presently residing on the Navajo reservation in the town of To’hajiilee,(Toe-hah-jah-lee) NM, this cuff was made by Navajo artisan Melissa Willie who follows in the artistic footsteps of not only one of the largest Navajo families (The "Willie's) but from a large family who all happen to be well known silversmiths.

Being around a houseful of artists such as hers, the art of making traditional Navajo jewelry was taught early on & she was actually taught by her late sister Laura at the age of 16 & is now a woman in her late 50's. Her specialty is in traditional Navajo jewelry just like her ancestors before her, but loves to give a more contemporary feel to what she makes. She is also a seamstress who specializes in making Navajo Velvet clothing that are adorned with conchos.

THE CUFFS

These are what you call “Metal Art” & are completely tooled from end to end by hand! Design 1 & 3 were made with a repousse technique that lines the center of the cuffs.

They’re made with a 16 gauge sterling so they’re durable, but not super heavy like some Navajo cuffs..There is not a big gap opening on each,so if you have a fleshy/thick wrist/arm, these can be opened a bit to accommodate. (This is something you will do) .

They have a traditional but yet contemporary edge being thy have a more mirror polished finishing that was then left oxidized in all the crevices to accentuate all the incredible stamping! This cuff displays just how skilled Melissa is as an artist..
